Digits accounting pricing is $65 a month for Essentials and $100 a month for Core, per business, with a 30-day trial and no setup fee. A $250 Pro plan is listed but not yet on sale. Accounting firms get a different deal: since April 2026 Digits charges a firm only for clients where at least 95 percent of transactions are closed with zero human touch, and nothing for the rest. The per-client price for firms is not published anywhere. Digits is also a full general ledger, so every client you put on it leaves QuickBooks or Xero, and that switch is the cost most comparisons leave out.
How much does Digits accounting cost per month?
These are the plans on digits.com/pricing, read in September 2026. There are no annual prices on the page and no published transaction limits. Each business or location needs its own subscription, and Digits serves US entities only.
| Plan | Price | Built for | What it adds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essentials | $65 a month | Solo owners and early-stage businesses | AI bookkeeping and reconciliation, bank and payroll feeds, three statements, bill pay, invoicing, Ask Digits, API and MCP access |
| Core (most popular) | $100 a month | Small and growing businesses | Everything in Essentials plus dimensional accounting and automated schedules |
| Pro | $250 a month, listed but not yet open | Businesses with an internal finance team | Custom reports, dashboards, budget vs actuals |
| Firm partner plans | Not published | Accounting and bookkeeping firms | Partner-only plans per client type, volume discounts, firm close tracker, branding, the firm's own books at no charge |
| Outcome-based (firms only) | Not published; $0 for clients under 95 percent zero-touch | Firms with automatable write-up clients | Pay only for clients Digits closes with at most 5 percent human work |
Payments carry their own fees, charged to the business whose account the payment runs through. Bill pay costs $0.50 per ACH and $2.50 per mailed check. Card payments collected through Digits Pay run 3.0 percent plus $0.30 on Essentials and 2.9 percent plus $0.30 on Core, and received ACH is 1.0 percent, capped at $15 on Essentials and $10 on Core. For a client paying 60 vendors a month by ACH that is $30, small next to the subscription but worth putting in the engagement letter so it does not surprise anyone.
How does Digits outcome-based pricing work for accounting firms?
A client qualifies when 95 percent or more of its transactions in the period are zero-touch, which Digits defines as neither created nor edited by a human accountant before the books close. If the firm touches more than 5 percent, Digits charges nothing for that client. The pricing is binary, not graduated: a client at 94 percent is free and a client at 95 percent costs the full per-client rate. The rate itself depends on firm size and client type (simple or complex, client advisory or tax-only) and is quoted, not listed. Business owners buying for themselves stay on the subscription plans above.
The threshold is easier to picture in transactions. A client with 300 transactions a month qualifies only if your team creates or edits 15 or fewer of them. A client with 80 transactions can afford 4. That is why the model favors clean, repetitive books (a service business with a few bank accounts and recurring vendors) and rarely bills for messy ones (a retailer with split transactions, cash, and a card processor that nets fees). The firm Digits used as its example went from roughly 75 percent to 98 percent zero-touch over 2025, so expect the bill to start low and climb as the automation learns each client.
What does Digits cost per client compared with QuickBooks, Xero and Booke?
A firm thinks in clients, so we priced one client on each common setup from each vendor's own pricing page, then multiplied by 40 write-up clients. The last column divides the monthly cost by the $24.36 median hourly pay of a US bookkeeping clerk (Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025): the hours the setup has to save each month to pay for itself. Promotional discounts are left out because they end.
| Setup, per client | Per month | 40 clients | Clerk hours to break even | Ledger switch? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Puzzle Core | $72 | $2,880 plus $149 per client to migrate | 3.0 | Yes |
| Digits Core (business list price) | $100 | $4,000 | 4.1 | Yes |
| QuickBooks Online Plus (built-in AI and reconciliation) | $140 | $5,600 | 5.7 | No |
| Xero Growing plus Booke AI | $184 | $7,360 | 7.6 | No |
| QuickBooks Online Essentials plus Booke AI | $214 | $8,560 | 8.8 | No |
| Zeni Starter (done-for-you, billed annually) | $494 | $19,760 | 20.3 | Yes |
| Digits outcome-based | Quoted; $0 for non-qualifying clients | Depends on how many clients pass 95 percent | Quote divided by $24.36 | Yes |
On list prices Digits is one of the cheapest AI ledgers per client, and it bundles bill pay and invoicing that a QuickBooks plus Booke stack pays for separately. The catch sits in the last column. The two setups that keep clients on QuickBooks or Xero cost more per month but ask nothing of the client. Digits and Puzzle ask every client to change the system their books live in, and some clients (or their lenders, or their payroll provider) will say no.
Is Digits cheaper than QuickBooks for an accounting firm?
Per client on list prices, yes: Core at $100 undercuts QuickBooks Online Plus at $140 and any QuickBooks plus Booke stack. Under the outcome-based model it can be cheaper still, because clients that do not reach 95 percent zero-touch cost nothing. It is not cheaper once you count migration. Moving a client from QuickBooks Online is a direct import, but the cutover date is fixed at setup and cannot be changed later, and clients on Xero or Puzzle have no direct sync at all: you upload the chart of accounts as a CSV and reconnect the banks. Budget one to three hours of staff time per client for the move and the first parallel close, which at the clerk median is $24 to $73 per client, or up to about $2,900 for 40 clients.
Clean up history before you set the cutover. If a client's QuickBooks file has months the bank feed never covered, bring those in first with a PDF bank statement to QuickBooks converter, because once Digits imports the balances as of the cutover date there is no second chance to move that date.
Is Digits accounting software free?
No. There is a 30-day trial on the business plans and the firm's own books cost nothing on a partner plan, but every client business pays a subscription or, under the firm model, a per-client fee once it qualifies. The only way a client costs a firm nothing on Digits is by not reaching the 95 percent zero-touch threshold, which also means your team is still doing more than 5 percent of the work on it by hand.
What should a firm ask Digits before signing?
- What is the per-client price for our mix of clients, in writing? The rate varies by firm size and client type and none of it is published.
- Over what period is the 95 percent measured, and who can see the score? The announcement does not say whether it is per month or per close.
- Does a reclassification after close count as a touch? Year-end adjustments are where most edits happen.
- What happens to our clients' data if we leave? The QuickBooks connection is archived at cutover, so the way back is an export.
- Which clients do you recommend we keep off Digits? A good answer names them. Digits does not prepare taxes; it exports a tax package.
What are the alternatives to Digits for a firm that keeps clients on QuickBooks?
If moving ledgers is off the table, the choices are the AI already inside QuickBooks Online (Plus and above reconcile and flag anomalies), an AI bookkeeper that works on top of the existing ledger such as Booke at $129 a business a month, or a custom agent built on your own rules. The custom route is what a firm with dozens of write-up clients on one ledger usually ends up pricing, because a per-business fee multiplies and a build does not. A focused agent that codes the bank feed and matches receipts across all your clients is about 120 to 220 hours of work, or roughly $450 to $1,525 a month spread over two years, and the client never leaves QuickBooks.
We compared nine accounting AI products per client, including Digits, Booke, Puzzle, Basis and Vic.ai, on our AI agent for accounting page, with the break-even client count for a custom build. For how those build hours are estimated, see the AI agent development cost audit, and if the firm is also weighing general-purpose agent tools priced per seat, Lindy AI pricing shows where seat pricing stops being the cheap option.
Who should choose Digits, and who should not?
Choose Digits if most of your write-up clients are simple US service businesses on QuickBooks Online, you are willing to migrate them, and you like being billed only for the clients the software actually closes. Start with five clean clients, run a parallel close, and read the zero-touch score before you move anyone else.
Skip it, or keep it to a subset, if your clients are on Xero or QuickBooks Desktop, if lenders or payroll providers depend on the current file, or if your value to clients sits in firm-specific rules that a new ledger will not follow. In that case describe the workflow in the hire brief at the top of this page and compare a scoped agent on your existing ledger with the Digits quote, in the same unit: dollars per client per month.
