Seats plus $0.99 an outcome, and six ways out
Intercom alternatives and cheaper options priced per AI resolution
Intercom bills per seat and again per Fin outcome, so the invoice climbs as the AI does its job. We read the pricing pages of the six helpdesks buyers shortlist most and put every one on the same five agent team at 1,000, 3,000 and 10,000 conversations a month.

the short answer
The cheapest Intercom alternative with real AI, for five agents handling 3,000 conversations a month, is Help Scout Plus with AI Answers at about $1,350, then Freshdesk Pro with Freddy at about $1,500, against $1,630 for Intercom Essential with Fin. Zendesk costs more, not less, once automated resolutions are billed. Above about 1,000 conversations a month, a custom support agent on a $19 helpdesk seat beats every packaged option, and the gap widens with volume.
Why people leave
Why teams look for a cheaper alternative to Intercom
Almost nobody leaves Intercom because the product is bad. They leave because of how it bills. There are two meters, and only one of them is under your control.
The first meter is seats. Essential is $29, Advanced $85 and Expert $132 a seat a month on annual terms, or $39, $99 and $139 paid monthly, according to Intercom's own pricing guide. Copilot, the agent assist, adds $29 a seat on annual terms. The second meter is Fin, at $0.99 per outcome on every plan, with a 50 outcome monthly minimum and $9.99 for each sales qualification.
That second meter is the one finance teams complain about. A good month for Fin is an expensive month for you, and it is hard to forecast before you know your resolution rate. Our Intercom Fin pricing breakdown works through what counts as an outcome and what a resolution rate does to the bill.

Best Intercom alternatives and what their own pricing pages say
Most Intercom alternatives lists are written by one of the alternatives, and each one ranks itself first. We do not sell a helpdesk, so nothing of ours is in this table. Prices are US list prices on annual billing, read from each vendor page in September 2026 unless the row says otherwise.
| Helpdesk | Seat price | AI agent price | Where it beats Intercom |
|---|---|---|---|
| Intercom (baseline) | Essential $29, Advanced $85, Expert $132 ($39, $99, $139 monthly) | Fin $0.99 per outcome, 50 a month minimum, $9.99 per qualification | It does not; this is the number to beat |
| Zendesk | Support Team $19, Suite Team $55, Suite Professional $115 | $1.50 per verified resolution committed, $2.00 pay as you go, after a small per seat allowance | Large teams that need voice, workforce tools and a deep app marketplace |
| Help Scout | Standard $25, Plus $45, Pro $75 per user | AI Answers $0.75 per resolution, with a monthly spend cap you set | Email-first teams that want a shared inbox and the lowest per resolution AI price we found |
| Freshdesk | Growth $19, Pro $55, Enterprise $89 per agent | Freddy AI Agent, 500 sessions once per new account, then $49 per 100 sessions. Copilot $29 per agent | Budget-led teams that want a full ticketing helpdesk at the lowest seat price |
| Gorgias | Per ticket, not per seat. Pro $300 a month for 2,000 tickets, extra tickets $0.36 | AI Agent about $0.85 to $1.00 per automated interaction, and each one also uses a ticket | Shopify and ecommerce brands with seasonal staff, since seats are not billed |
| Crisp | Per workspace. Mini $45 (4 seats), Essentials $95 (10 seats), Plus $295 (20 seats) | AI credits included, $5 is about 90 automated conversations, so roughly $0.06 each | Small teams that want a flat bill and simpler AI answers |
| Custom agent | Keep any helpdesk, for example Freshdesk Growth at $19 | About $0.05 of model tokens per conversation, plus a build of 80 to 200 hours | High volume, specific rules, or data the AI has to look up in your own systems |
Two caveats. Zendesk's $1.50 and $2.00 come from its own pricing page, and since May 18, 2026 only verified resolutions are billed; the Zendesk alternatives page prices that for ten agents. And Crisp's AI is a lighter answer bot than Fin or Freddy; its low number is real, but it is not the same product. For Gorgias plan math in full, see our Gorgias pricing breakdown. Lighter website chat tools such as Tidio and Chatbase are compared on the Tidio alternatives page.
One team, one month
Every Intercom competitor at 3,000 conversations a month
Five agents, annual billing, and the AI resolving half of the conversations. Where a vendor meters AI sessions rather than resolutions (Freshdesk, Crisp), every conversation counts. The custom agent sits on Freshdesk Growth seats with $490 a month of hosting, upkeep and build cost spread over 24 months. Where a range exists, the bar shows the low end.
Scale it
Monthly cost at 1,000, 3,000 and 10,000 conversations
Same assumptions as the bars. The ranking changes with volume, which is the point: a tool that is cheapest for a seed stage startup is rarely cheapest a year later.
| Five agents, per month | 1,000 | 3,000 | 10,000 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Intercom Essential + Fin | $640 | $1,630 | $5,095 |
| Intercom Advanced + Fin | $920 | $1,910 | $5,375 |
| Zendesk Suite Team + AI agents | $990 to $1,225 | $2,490 to $3,225 | $7,740 to $10,225 |
| Help Scout Plus + AI Answers | $600 | $1,350 | $3,975 |
| Freshdesk Pro + Freddy AI Agent | $520 | $1,500 | $4,930 |
| Gorgias Pro + AI Agent | $725 to $800 | $1,935 to $2,160 | $7,430 to $8,180 |
| Crisp Essentials (lighter AI) | about $126 | about $237 | about $626 |
| Custom agent, lean build | $635 | $735 | $1,085 |
| Custom agent, expensive build | $2,145 | $2,245 | $2,595 |
About 1,000 conversations
Where a lean custom agent ($585 fixed with seats, plus $0.05 a chat) crosses Intercom Essential with Fin. Against Help Scout Plus it crosses near 1,110, against Freshdesk Pro near 1,260.
About 3,750 to 4,400
Where even an expensive custom build ($2,095 fixed) crosses Intercom Advanced and then Essential. Below that, the packaged tool is the cheaper way to get good AI.
Seats stop mattering
At 10,000 conversations the usage meter (AI and tickets) is 92 to 97 percent of every packaged bill except Crisp. A cheaper seat saves little, a cheaper AI meter saves thousands.
The option nobody lists
Keep Fin, drop the Intercom seats
Fin is sold standalone. It runs on Zendesk, Salesforce, HubSpot, Freshworks, Front, Zoho, Gorgias and others at the same $0.99 per outcome, with no Intercom seats and a 50 outcome minimum. If you like Fin's answers and dislike the seat bill, that is the smallest possible switch.
Be clear about what it saves. At five agents and 3,000 conversations, Fin on Freshdesk Growth costs $1,580 against $1,630 for Intercom Essential, a $50 difference. The saving only gets real on Advanced or Expert seats and on bigger teams: twenty Advanced seats are $1,700 a month, the same twenty on Freshdesk Growth $380.
- Keeps Fin, its training on your help center, its resolution rate
- Removes Intercom seats, Copilot seats, the Messenger contract
- Costs you A helpdesk migration and new macros and reporting
- Worth it when You run ten or more Advanced or Expert seats
Pick by situation
Which Intercom chat alternative fits your team
Mostly email, small team
Help Scout. Per user pricing is simple, the inbox is the product, and AI Answers is the lowest per resolution rate we found with a spend cap you control.
Full ticketing on a budget
Freshdesk. The $19 Growth seat is the cheapest real helpdesk seat here, and Freddy's one-time 500 sessions cover a small team's AI trial.
Shopify brand with seasonal staff
Gorgias. Tickets are billed, seats are not, so a holiday hire costs nothing. Watch the AI meter, because each automated reply also uses a ticket.
Enterprise, voice and WFM
Zendesk. You pay more for AI, but you get voice, workforce management and the largest marketplace of integrations in the category.
Tiny team, flat bill
Crisp. One workspace price covers up to ten seats on Essentials. Accept that the AI is simpler than Fin.
High volume or specific rules
A custom agent on the helpdesk you already have. It looks up orders and accounts in your systems and costs about $0.05 a conversation to run.
A startup note, in fairness to Intercom: its Early Stage program takes 93 percent off the first year, 50 percent off the second and 25 percent off the third for companies that raised under $10 million with fewer than 15 employees. If you qualify, stay put and revisit this page when the discount steps down. Vendors reprice often, so it is worth keeping an eye on competitor pricing changes before any renewal.

What a custom Intercom Fin alternative includes
A custom support agent is the same set of pieces Fin is made of, built on your stack and billed at model cost. Most scopes we see run 80 to 200 hours, or $4,800 to $30,000 at $60 to $150 an hour. The running cost is hosting, monitoring and about $0.05 of tokens per conversation, with no per outcome fee.

The honest version
Where BotGigs fits, and where it does not
BotGigs does not sell a helpdesk. It is where you hire the person who builds the support agent, or who migrates you from Intercom to the helpdesk you picked above. Describe your ticket volume, your helpdesk, the systems the agent has to read, and what it may and may not do, and get back a scoped hire brief with matched chatbot developers, their rates and their delivery location. Posting the job is $99 a month.
If you handle a few hundred conversations a month, you probably do not need us: pick Help Scout (see our Help Scout pricing breakdown) or Freshdesk from the table and switch on their AI. If Freshdesk is the tool you are leaving, our Freshdesk alternatives page runs the same math for an eight agent ticketing team. Hiring pays off past about a thousand conversations, when answers depend on data in your own systems, or when a vendor wants a five figure contract for something your stack can do. Teams whose chat is really a sales channel should read our Drift alternatives page, and teams comparing knowledge base bots should see Chatbase alternatives.
Questions
Intercom alternative questions buyers actually ask
What is a cheaper alternative to Intercom?
For a five agent team with half of its conversations resolved by AI, Help Scout Plus with AI Answers costs about $1,350 a month at 3,000 conversations and Freshdesk Pro with Freddy AI Agent about $1,500, against $1,630 for Intercom Essential with Fin. Crisp is far cheaper on paper but its AI is lighter. Above roughly 1,000 conversations a month, a custom agent on a low cost helpdesk costs less than all of them.
Why is Intercom so expensive?
Intercom bills two meters. Seats cost $29, $85 or $132 a month on annual terms ($39, $99 or $139 monthly), and Fin adds $0.99 for every outcome, with a 50 outcome monthly minimum. The seat line is predictable, but the Fin line grows with every resolved conversation, so the bill rises fastest exactly when the AI is working well.
What is the best Intercom alternative?
It depends on why you are leaving. Zendesk is the enterprise like for like, Help Scout the simplest shared inbox with the lowest per resolution AI price we found at $0.75, Freshdesk the cheapest full helpdesk seat at $19, Gorgias the Shopify specialist, and Crisp the lowest flat fee. Teams with high volume and specific rules usually get the lowest cost from a custom agent.
Can I use Fin without Intercom?
Yes. Fin runs as a standalone AI agent on Zendesk, Salesforce, HubSpot, Freshworks, Front, Zoho, Gorgias and other helpdesks at $0.99 per outcome with no Intercom seats, subject to a 50 outcome monthly minimum. That lets you keep the AI you trust and move only the seat cost to a cheaper helpdesk.
Is Zendesk cheaper than Intercom?
Not once AI is counted. Zendesk seats start at $19 for Support Team and $55 for Suite Team on annual terms, but automated resolutions are reported at about $1.50 each committed and $2.00 pay as you go, above Fin at $0.99. At 3,000 conversations and five agents, Suite Team with AI agents costs about $2,490 to $3,225 a month against $1,630 for Intercom Essential.
How much does it cost to build my own Intercom style AI agent?
A retrieval support agent that answers from your help center, looks up orders or accounts and hands off to your helpdesk is typically 80 to 200 hours of work, or $4,800 to $30,000 at $60 to $150 an hour. Running it costs about $0.05 in model tokens per conversation plus hosting and upkeep.
