Five agents, three volumes, one unit
Help Scout alternatives and Help Scout competitors priced per AI resolution
Help Scout is already one of the cheaper helpdesks, so the reason to switch is rarely price alone. It is the user caps, the missing phone channel, or an AI that can only answer from your Docs. We priced seven alternatives and a custom agent from their own pages for one five agent team at 1,000, 3,000 and 6,000 conversations a month.

the short answer
For a five agent team whose AI resolves 40 percent of conversations, Help Scout Standard with AI Answers stays the cheapest option with a published AI price up to about 3,500 conversations a month. Past that, HubSpot Service Hub Professional costs less because its AI is about $0.50 a resolution. Zendesk, Freshdesk and Intercom all cost more at every volume we priced. A custom agent on Help Scout seats undercuts AI Answers from about 1,760 conversations a month on a lean build.
Assumptions: annual billing, US list prices read from each vendor's page on October 5, 2026 (Zendesk, Freshdesk, Intercom, HubSpot and Front from our October 2 read), AI on every conversation and resolving 40 percent. The math is printed below so you can rerun it with your own rate.
Why teams leave
Why support teams look for a Help Scout alternative
Help Scout prices are easy to read. Standard is $25 per user a month on annual billing, Plus is $45 and Pro is $75, with AI Answers at $0.75 for each conversation the AI resolves without a person. Next to Zendesk or Intercom that is a small bill. Teams leave for other reasons.
The first is the cap. Standard sells at most 25 users and Plus at most 50. Hiring the 26th agent does not add one $45 seat, it moves all 26 people to Plus, and the bill goes from $625 to $1,170 a month. The 51st user moves everyone to Pro, which also carries a 10 user minimum. A growing team feels that as a step, not a slope.
The second is channel. Help Scout has email, chat, SMS, WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger, but phone goes through a partner such as Aircall. The third is the AI itself: AI Answers replies from your Docs and the sources you add, and it does not look up an order, change a plan or issue a refund in your own systems. Our Help Scout pricing breakdown covers every plan, add-on and cap.

One extra hire at 25 users adds $545 a month (87 percent). At 50 users it adds $1,575 (70 percent). Plus includes 15 light users and Pro up to 50, which softens this for teammates who only read and comment.
The audit
Help Scout competitors and what their own pricing pages say
Most pages ranking for this search are written by a helpdesk that lists itself first. We do not sell a helpdesk. Prices are US list prices per user a month on annual billing.
| Helpdesk | Seat price | AI price | Where it beats Help Scout |
|---|---|---|---|
| Help Scout (baseline) | Standard $25 (up to 25 users), Plus $45 (up to 50), Pro $75 (10 user minimum) | AI Answers $0.75 per resolution, spend caps, 3 month trial | This is the number to beat |
| HubSpot Service Hub | Starter $20 monthly, Professional $90 plus $1,500 onboarding | Customer Agent about $0.50 per resolved conversation (50 credits), 3,000 credits a month included on Professional | High AI volume, and teams whose CRM is already HubSpot |
| Hiver | Growth $25, Pro $55, Elite $85 (monthly $35, $65, $95), 2 seat minimum | AI agents listed as included in the plan; no per resolution meter published | Teams that want to stay inside Gmail and keep AI off a meter |
| Front | Starter $25, Professional $65, Enterprise $105 | Autopilot $0.05 triage, $0.39 handoff, $0.89 resolution per conversation; Copilot $20 per seat | Account managers, ops and support working the same threads |
| Freshdesk | Growth $19, Pro $55, Enterprise $89 | Freddy AI Agent $0.49 per session, resolved or not | Lower entry seat, and only cheaper on AI if Freddy resolves over 65 percent |
| Zendesk | Support Team $19, Suite Team $55, Suite Professional $115 | $1.50 per verified resolution committed, $2.00 pay as you go | Large teams that need voice, workforce tools and a big app marketplace |
| Intercom | Essential $29, Advanced $85, Expert $132 | Fin from $0.99 per outcome | Chat and onboarding inside a software product |
| Zoho Desk | Standard $14, Professional $23, Enterprise $40 | Zia Agents included; 30 million model tokens a month, then $1 per million | Lowest seat, and teams already on Zoho CRM |
| Custom agent | Keep Help Scout Standard at $25 a seat | About $0.05 of model tokens per conversation, plus a 60 to 160 hour build | Real volume, or answers that need data from your own product |
Three caveats. Hiver lists AI agents inside every plan but we found no published usage limit, so get the fair use terms in writing before you count on it. Zoho Desk bills AI by model tokens instead of resolutions, 30 million a month included and $1 per million after (our Zoho Desk alternatives page has the math). Front bills Autopilot once per conversation at the highest level reached: $0.05 triage, $0.39 handoff, $0.89 resolution, so its row below shows a range from the unresolved rest triaged to the rest handed off. Our Front alternatives page runs that math for an eight seat team.
The unit that matters
What one AI resolved conversation costs on Help Scout and its competitors
Every vendor counts AI differently: resolutions, outcomes, sessions, credits. We converted each one to the cost of a conversation the AI actually resolved, at a 40 percent resolution rate where a vendor bills attempts.
Help Scout lands in the lower half. Only HubSpot's credit model and a self-run agent go lower among the tools that publish a number. Freshdesk is the interesting one: it bills every session at $0.49, so it beats Help Scout only when Freddy resolves more than 65 percent of what it touches. Few knowledge bases get there.

HubSpot Customer Agent
Custom agent, tokens
Hiver is left off the scale because it publishes no AI unit price. Freshdesk is $0.49 a session divided by 0.4; the custom agent is $0.05 of tokens a conversation divided by 0.4, before its fixed build cost.
Scale it
Monthly cost for five agents at 1,000, 3,000 and 6,000 conversations
Five agents, annual billing, AI on every conversation and resolving 40 percent. Included allowances are subtracted and HubSpot's $1,500 onboarding fee is spread over 24 months. The custom agent keeps Help Scout Standard seats and adds $440 to $1,750 a month of build, hosting and upkeep over two years.

| Custom agent on Help Scout Standard, expensive build | $1,925 | $2,025 | $2,175 |
~1,760
Conversations a month where a lean custom agent ($440 fixed plus $0.05 a conversation) drops below AI Answers on the same Standard seats. An expensive build needs about 7,000.
~3,575
Where HubSpot Service Hub Professional passes Help Scout Standard. Against Plus the crossover comes earlier, at about 2,575.
65 percent
The resolution rate Freddy must beat before Freshdesk's $0.49 per session costs less per conversation than Help Scout's $0.75 per resolution.
Never
Zendesk Suite Team and Intercom Advanced never come out cheaper than Help Scout Plus here. Both have the higher seat and the higher AI unit.
Where Help Scout wins
When staying on Help Scout is the right call
If your team is under 25 people, mostly answers email and resolves under about 1,500 conversations a month with AI, Help Scout is hard to beat. The seat is low, AI Answers only bills when it actually resolves something, and spend caps stop a busy month from turning into a finance conversation.
Moving helpdesks also has a cost that no pricing page shows: saved replies, workflows, tags, Docs articles, customer history and the habits of every agent. If the trigger is only AI quality, replace the AI layer and keep the inbox. The same goes for teams that only need a phone line, which Aircall adds without a migration.
Eight agents on Standard, 2,000 conversations, AI resolves 40 percent, one extra inbox
- 8 users x $25$200
- AI Answers, 800 x $0.75$600
- Third inbox$10
The same team on Zendesk Suite Team with committed resolutions is about $1,624. On Intercom Advanced with Fin, about $1,472.
Pick by situation
Which alternative to Help Scout fits your team
High AI volume, CRM on HubSpot
Service Hub Professional. The seat is $90, but Customer Agent at about $0.50 a resolution makes it cheaper than Help Scout Standard from about 3,575 conversations for five agents.
Team lives in Gmail
Hiver. $55 a user on Pro with AI agents listed as included. Ask for the usage limit in writing, because a bundled AI is only cheap until it is capped.
Support and account managers share threads
Front. $65 on Professional, built for teams where sales, ops and support all work the same customer conversations.
Chat inside a software product
Intercom. More expensive on both seat and AI, but in product messaging, tours and Fin are where it is strongest.
Past 50 agents, need voice and WFM
Zendesk. You pay more for AI, but you get native voice at usage rates, workforce management and the largest app marketplace.
AI must read your own data
Keep Help Scout and add a custom agent. It reads orders, plans and invoices from your systems, writes through the Help Scout API and costs about $0.05 a conversation to run.
If you are comparing from the other side, our Zendesk alternatives, Intercom alternatives and Freshdesk alternatives pages run the same math for larger teams, and Shopify brands should read Gorgias alternatives.
Build it
How a custom AI agent on Help Scout gets built
Help Scout exposes conversations, customers and Docs through its API, so a custom agent does not require a move. Scopes we see run 60 to 160 hours. At $100 to $150 an hour that is $6,000 to $24,000, or $250 to $1,000 a month over two years, plus hosting, monitoring and upkeep. Run it against a few hundred past conversations before it answers a customer; our guide to evaluating an AI agent before you ship it covers the test set, and the AI customer service page compares build and buy across more vendors.

The honest version
Where BotGigs fits, and where it does not
BotGigs does not sell a helpdesk. It is where you hire the developer who builds the support agent on top of Help Scout, or who moves your conversations, saved replies, workflows and Docs to the tool you picked above. Describe your volume, your helpdesk, the systems the agent must read and the actions it may take, and get back a scoped hire brief with matched chatbot developers, their rates and their delivery location. Posting the job is $99 a month.
If your AI resolves fewer than about 700 conversations a month, you probably do not need us: AI Answers at $0.75 costs less than any build at that size. Hiring pays off past about 1,760 conversations, when answers depend on data in your own product, or when the 26th or 51st hire is about to reprice the whole team.
Put in the hire brief
- Monthly conversations by channel and the share you expect AI to resolve
- Your Help Scout plan and user count, or the helpdesk you are moving to
- Systems the agent must read: billing, CRM, product database
- Actions it may take and the limits on each
- Go-live date and who reviews its answers in week one
Questions
Help Scout alternative questions buyers ask
What is the best alternative to Help Scout?
It depends on volume. For a five agent team with AI resolving 40 percent, Help Scout Standard with AI Answers is the cheapest option with a published AI price up to about 3,500 conversations a month. Above that, HubSpot Service Hub Professional with Customer Agent costs less, and a custom agent on Help Scout seats beats AI Answers from about 1,760 conversations on a lean build.
Who are Help Scout competitors?
The tools most often compared with Help Scout are Zendesk, Freshdesk, Front, Intercom, HubSpot Service Hub, Hiver and Zoho Desk, plus Gorgias for Shopify stores. All of them publish seat prices; they differ most on how they bill AI, per resolution, per session, per outcome, per credit or bundled into the seat.
Is there a cheaper alternative to Help Scout?
On seats, Zoho Desk at $14 to $23 and Freshdesk Growth at $19 cost less than Help Scout Standard at $25. With AI, few packaged tools beat Help Scout: AI Answers is $0.75 per resolution against $1.50 on Zendesk and $0.99 on Intercom Fin. HubSpot Customer Agent at about $0.50 and Hiver, which lists AI agents inside its seat price, are the exceptions.
Is Help Scout cheaper than Zendesk?
Yes, at every volume we priced. Help Scout Plus is $45 per user against $55 for Zendesk Suite Team, and AI Answers is $0.75 per resolution against $1.50 committed on Zendesk. For five agents at 3,000 conversations a month with 40 percent resolved, that is about $1,125 on Help Scout Plus against about $2,065 on Zendesk.
Why do teams outgrow Help Scout?
Usually the user caps. Standard sells up to 25 users and Plus up to 50, so the 26th user moves the whole team to Plus and the 51st to Pro at $75 with a 10 user minimum. Teams also leave when they need voice, complex routing or AI that reads data from their own product.
How much does a custom AI support agent on Help Scout cost?
An agent that answers from your Help Scout Docs, reads account data through your own APIs and writes replies and notes through the Help Scout API is typically 60 to 160 hours of work. Over two years with hosting and upkeep that is about $440 to $1,750 a month of fixed cost plus about $0.05 of model tokens per conversation.
Helpdesk AI prices moved several times this year, including Zendesk's switch to verified resolutions in May and HubSpot's move to outcome pricing in April. Check each rate again before you sign, and put the AI price per resolution in the contract, not just the seat price.
