In the US, an AI development company charges roughly $120 to $250 per hour, and project pricing runs from about $30,000 for a narrow build to $150,000 or more for a full enterprise system. A single scoped automation hired through one vetted specialist is usually far cheaper, from about $1,500 to $12,000. What you pay depends on scope, how many of your systems the AI has to touch, and whether you are buying a one-off build or ongoing model work. This guide breaks down the real 2026 ranges, the costs that hide inside the quote, and how to spend less without cutting quality.

"AI development company" covers everything from a two-person studio to a 200-person agency, so a single price is meaningless without context. The useful way to think about cost is by pricing model, then by what actually drives the number up. Below are the ranges buyers are quoted in the US market in 2026.

How much does it cost to hire an AI development company?

There are three common ways AI development companies price work, and the right one depends on how well defined your project is.

Pricing modelTypical US rangeBest when
Hourly / time and materials$120 to $250 per hourScope will evolve as you learn
Fixed project$30,000 to $150,000+Requirements are clear and stable
Dedicated team (monthly)$5,000 to $15,000 per developerOngoing, multi-month roadmap
Single scoped automation$1,500 to $12,000One clear job, hired through a specialist

Enterprise builds with strict compliance, custom model training, or deep integration across many systems can exceed $500,000. Most mid-market projects, though, land between $30,000 and $150,000 when routed through an agency, and a good chunk of that is agency overhead rather than engineering. The AI developer rate guide shows what the underlying build actually costs.

Test every quote against the US wage floor

One public number tells you what an agency rate is made of. The Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median US software developer wage at $64.44 an hour ($135,980 a year, May 2025), before payroll tax, benefits and bench time. At $120 to $250 an hour, an agency staffing a US median engineer passes about 26 to 54 percent of the bill to that engineer; the rest pays for sales, project management, idle time and margin. The dedicated-team row is the one to check twice. Spread over roughly 173 working hours a month, $5,000 to $15,000 a developer is about $29 to $87 an hour, and the bottom of that band is below what a median US developer is paid before any overhead at all. A quote there is offshore, junior or both. That can be the right buy, but ask where the engineers sit and who they are before you sign, not after the first sprint review.

What drives the price up?

Two projects with the same one-line description can differ 10x in cost. The variables that move the number are consistent:

  • Integration depth. A standalone tool is cheap. Wiring the AI into your CRM, ERP, data warehouse and inboxes, each with its own auth and edge cases, is where hours pile up.
  • Custom models vs existing ones. Calling a hosted language model is fast. Training a custom model on your data means data collection, cleaning, labeling and evaluation, a different budget entirely.
  • Data readiness. If your data is messy or scattered, expect a chunk of the budget to go on plumbing before any AI is built. A company that says data is "not a concern" has not shipped enough real projects.
  • Compliance. HIPAA, SOC 2, or handling regulated financial data adds review cycles, security work and documentation that a casual internal tool never needs.
  • Ongoing maintenance. Models drift. Budget for monitoring and periodic retraining, not just the initial build, or quality quietly degrades after launch.

What costs are hidden in the quote?

The headline number rarely includes everything. Before you sign, ask what you pay separately. The usual extras are third-party API usage (a hosted model's per-token cost), hosting and infrastructure, integration platform licenses, and post-launch support. On usage-based AI, the API bill can rival the build cost within a year at high volume, so get an estimate up front. Ask directly: what API, hosting and license costs are on us, and how do they scale with usage?

Opacity about the real bill is not unique to AI work. When we checked twelve managed IT providers, only three published a rate at all, and the setup charge, the minimum commitment and the month 13 renewal rate were the numbers none of them led with, as the breakdown of managed IT services pricing sets out. The defense is the same in both markets: ask for a quote that names every line item rather than a single blended number.

How to hire an AI development company for less

You can cut cost without cutting quality by being precise about scope and skipping the parts of the agency model you do not need.

  • Scope before you shop. A tight brief, deliverables, inputs, outputs, and how you will judge success, turns an open-ended discovery phase into a fixed quote. Vague briefs are what make projects balloon.
  • Hire the specialist directly. For one automation you rarely need a full agency and its account layer. A vetted developer or a small team delivers the same build without the margin.
  • Buy before you build. If a working agent already solves your job, renting it beats commissioning a custom version. Check first.
  • Phase the work. Ship the highest-value piece first, prove it, then fund the next phase. It caps your downside if the first result disappoints.

This is the model BotGigs is built around. Describe your project in the hire-brief demo and you get a scope in about twenty seconds: deliverables, milestones, the exact specialism to hire, and an honest effort band, so you walk into pricing with leverage instead of a blank page. When the answer is a build, you can hire an AI development team on demand without the agency retainer.

Is an AI development company worth it versus building in-house?

Hiring a company makes sense when you need the work done once, done fast, or done with skills you do not have on staff. Building an in-house AI team costs $120,000 to $250,000 per hire per year, plus 25 to 40% in overhead, and takes months to assemble, so it only pays off when AI is a permanent, core part of your product. For a defined project with a clear end, an external specialist or team is almost always cheaper and faster. The same math applies to routine back-office automation: when the job is really about moving documents and data, an existing tool that can automate invoice processing for your AP team will beat a custom build on both cost and time to value.

One check worth running before you accept any of these numbers: almost nobody in this market publishes a rate. When we opened the pricing pages of nine vendors in September 2026, four printed a complete rate card and every one of the four was a platform rather than a development agency. The full audit, and the seat count at which a custom build overtakes a subscription, is in our comparison of AI agent development companies and what they publish.

The bottom line

Budget $30,000 to $150,000 for a typical mid-market AI project through an agency, less if you hire a specialist directly for one scoped automation, and more if you need custom models, deep integration or strict compliance. The biggest savings come from a tight scope and from checking whether an off-the-shelf agent already does the job. Start by getting your project scoped for free, then compare routes with the help of a vetted AI consultant who can also build. See how hiring works on BotGigs end to end.
